Transgender Students
As more students are coming forward as transgender, we have an increase in requests to have the student's preferred name on their profile for teachers and staff to use/see. These are not legal name changes, but we would like the ability to accommodate the student's request once they go through our approval process and still keep the legal name sending for state reporting.
Currently, there is a Name Override field on the NCLB tab where you can put the legal name. It was originally set up for students who have names that are longer than the name fields on the profile so it would send properly for the state ID number. I have tried use this as a work around for our transgender students by putting their legal name in this field and the preferred name on the Profile. It works for sending the name for the WISEid, but Skyward does not look in this area for sending the name info to WISEdata (this looks at the profile name). As a result, we have errors that the name doesn't match the name on the ID number.
We really need to have a better way to function for these situations. There is the "Other Name" field, but I don't find that this field is very useful because it doesn't show on the profile when you look for a student on the student management side and teachers have to specifically check to have other name display - and even then, the other name doesn't display in all areas of EA+.
In addition to allowing the preferred name to be on the profile but still send the legal name for state reporting, we would like to have options on what name prints on certain documents (report cards, transcripts, letters, online forms, etc). Some things we will want to have the legal name print, but on others we would want the preferred name to print.
We are not a large district and we have at least 4 students currently that are in this situation. I'm sure there are larger districts with more students and I would expect we will see this more often.

Jacob, I've put in a ticket on this because I can see the identity tab now in Skyward but can't find any documentation on how it works and if we can customize what appears on display screens in Skyward vs. transcripts, state reporting, etc. We have different needs based on the area.

Thank you Jacob for the update! Do you have a estimated time of completion? This is a very hot subject as there have been complaints that we are not sensitive to the gender identity needs of our students. I hope this will be coming very soon as my school board and teachers are VERY interested in making sure we are compliant w/the gender plans that are current.

Since transcripts are legal documents, can both the legal name and the preferred name appear on the transcript?

Please consider this request soon. It would also be important to add a prefered full name option for gender identity preferences so that schools have an option to "show" the preferred name in educator access plus, family and student access. This would allow options for legal name printing on transcripts and other official documents AND sensitivity for gender identity.

@Jacque Deckard....thank you for pointing me in the direction of the "Other Name". We tested this scenario and it looks as though this is not a profound enough change to satisfy the student.

I would like to add to this request in that the "other" name should be able to be pulled into exports that are sent to other programs such as Destiny, Schoology, and Google. Any student who is using a different name for a variety of important reasons, need to have that name pulled for the export data. It causes confusion when a teacher then can't find the name that they see in the gradebook. I just had two situations this week that could have been cleared up if the "other" name had been exported.

Lori, you will be happy to know there is already a field for this. It is labeled 'Other Name' and it can be found on the Student Profile General Tab. This name can also be displayed in the gradebook, etc.

Districts could use this field to enter a first name that the student would like to be called instead of having the student legally change their first name. This would allow the district to keep the legal name on their transcript for colleges.

I absolutely agree on this, our district would benefit from an area that can easily be seen by all appropriate staff indicating the preferred gender and name with the legal name and gender still being viewed. Also when the gender identity is turned on and changed it changes it everywhere which is an issue as this is just a preference not legal change and should not be printed on transcripts, report cards etc.

Our district uses the "other name" field for students who have had a legal name change.
Using other name would not work in our case for students who have not had the legal name change but might be in the process of having that change as part of their gender transition. Our policy is to address students by their preferred name and gender. I don't see anywhere we can put their preferred name and gender into Skyward.
We added NSOE this year and there is a field called "nickname" but I am not sure where that populates in Skyward. Not sure that field would help anyway.

We would like the preferred name to show in teachers gradebook when taking attendance. Currently we would have to educate sub's in choosing "show preferred name" in the attendance area. We would like this to be a default so that our transgender students or other students are not embarrassed if sub would use the legal name.

We also see a need for this. We would like the preferred name to show in the attendance area as well. So that when we have substitutes they see the legal and preferred name without having to select "show preferred name" in the options area

I agree with Bill, on all points.

The "Other Name" field does not work well for this. When you have another name in the "other name" field, it does not show up everywhere (it shows in very few places, actually) and the teachers need to select to show the other name in their grade book in order to see it (most of my teachers probably wouldn't bother).

Would you be able to utilize the field "Other Name" on the Profile tab for this?

It is my understanding that the Student Profile name should be the Legal Name (for a number of valid reasons). If you start allowing the Student Profile name to be used as the "preferred name" for one category of students, then you open the door for any student to have their preferred name entered there. There has got to be a better way to resolve this issue that does not create a potentially bigger mess.

We have transgender students who would like to use a preferred name instead of their legal name. In order for the preferred name to show in Skyward but still report the legal name for Wisconsin state reporting, we enter the legal name on the Student Name Override area on the WI/NCLB tab and then change the profile name to the preferred name. This works a lot better than using the "other name" field for transgender students.
We would like to add the ability to choose where the name and gender pull from for transcripts, report cards, etc. Right now, when we run a transcript for a transgender student, the name pulls from the general profile tab and the gender pulls the gender identity field. We would like to be able to select to pull the name from either the general profile OR the Name Override and pick the gender OR gender identity. There are times when we want the legal name and gender and times when the preferred name and gender identity are more appropriate.
