IEP legal name
When a students name is changed in the Identity tab, their legal name still prints on the transcript and report card. We need for it also to print on an IEP or 504. It isn't right that we can use that tab for students who have a name change because of gender identity, unless they are a special education student. It should be an option to change to print legal name on different reports, including IEPs & 504s.

Sorry for the delayed message here, however I bring good news! We added some configuration settings to Special Education to allow you to choose what values to merge onto Special Education forms. There are options to pull a value from the Legal Name fields when they are filled in or only from the regular name fields, and from Gender Identity when filled in or only from the Gender field. This was completed and released with 05.23.06.00.04 - Jun 2023 Release PMP0 Addendum4, which was sent out 7/20/2023.
Thank you all for your feedback on this idea!

Since an IEP is a legal contract between the District and student's parents, the student's legal name should be available to be used as a Special Ed merge field on the legal document. It does not make sense that the legal document would have only the preferred name on it when the data sent to the State has the legal name uploaded on it and is not the same name on the legal document. I understand SMS 2.0 is moving toward Q product but I also understand the SMS 2.0 does not have a sunset date either.
Update: May 19, 2023 : Skyward contacted the KSDE Special Education attorneys and they said "that both Legal Name and gender identity are local district decisions on whether a student uses the preferred name/identity on an IEP. He says the state of Kansas has not taken a position on this subject." With the KSDE attorneys saying that, ?
I would hope Skyward will update the Sped merge fields with the preferred name and gender identity. That way the Skyward districts have the option to use the preferred name and gender identity, like the KSDE attorneys said it is the "local district decisions on whether a student uses the preferred name/identity on an IEP".
At this point in time, the limitations of the software does not allow the local school districts to have the decision to use the preferred name or gender identity on their student's IEPS.
